A few months back, a friend of mine (Holli) was in a nearly fatal motorcycle accident in India and suffered major brain trauma. The hospitals there, like in most developing countries, weren’t sufficient to care for her injuries. So she needed to be med-evac’d. Do you have any idea how much that costs?? Evidently, it can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars!
So it got me to thinking. What would my family do if I were in an accident like that? The hospitals here in Honduras probably aren’t much better than the ones in India. And I don’t have US health insurance to cover something like that. And who just has $150,000 lying around?
So a couple of weekends ago we were visiting with friends here in Tegus. (The husband commutes from the US every couple of months, and his wife and family live here permanently.) They have health insurance that works in Honduras AND in the US. And it covers emergency evacuation for situations just like the one Holli was in.
So since then I’ve been researching international travel insurance. One of the sites I found was www.hccmis.com. And according to the prices on their site, it’s very affordable depending on the deductible, even on a Honduran salary.
So if you are traveling abroad (studying abroad, backpacking, whatever!) or living abroad like me, then I suggest you consider what you and your family would do if you were in an accident like Holli’s. If you want, you can click HERE to obtain a free quote for international health insurance. It’s quick and painless, and this kind of insurance could turn out to be priceless if something ever happened to you abroad!

We cannot really deny the fact that we love to travel overseas to see different and beautiful places and feel different cultures. But sometimes it limits us to travel if we bring along our whole family, especially if we have small children traveling along with us or even older members of the family.
We cannot help but think about compromising one’s health while traveling abroad. We cannot avoid some incidents that we could encounter such as minor accidents and illnesses while outside the country and traveling. We know how hard it is to be hospitalized in foreign places where it could usually cost a lot due to the fact that domestic health insurance policies only cover us in our home country.
Fortunately, MultiNational Underwriters at www.mnui.com addresses these limitations. They offer international travel health insurance plans that could cover medical health services and provide benefits for your specific travels abroad.

Recently the big dinner table conversation has been about health care around the world. Yes, we’re nerds thank you very much. My friends, folks and I discussed the major differences in the health care systems existing worldwide. I even saw a great documentary that compared the health systems of 5 countries, both public and private systems, and apparently Taiwan has one of the best. Props to my friends over there.
But I’m not Taiwanese and neither is most of my audience, and so that doesn’t move my marbles much. Did I just use the word marbles? Jeez.
For us Americans, we need to remember that we have private insurance, meaning that we’re responsible for selecting health care providers that will cover our butts when we’re not on American soil. Many students forget this or don’t even think about it when they travel. They only discover when they need medical attention after breaking a limb while skiing in the Alps or running away from elephants in the Congo.
- Before leaving, make sure to ask if your health care provider covers you internationally! Most insurances only cover your butt on American soil, so beware!
- If they don’t, ask around for recommended health insurance providers.
- And be careful when traveling!
Recently there’s been talk about a provider called MultiNational Underwriters. Here’s their link: www.mnui.com. I don’t know much about them, but they seem to be good for international students. They are affordable and will cover your health issues when abroad. It’s always important to travel with valid health insurance, so make sure to do it!

I feel it is so important to note that even during tough times when every penny counts, health insurance is one thing we should not give up. Think about it. It may seem like an expense you could do without for a short period of time, say until you get a new job or your business improves, but that short time can easily turn into a very long extended period. And unfortunately, accidents and illnesses do not wait patiently on the sidelines until you have health insurance once again.
I remember one time when we had no coverage of any kind. With my husband being self-employed, and me not working outside of the home, we are guilty of foregoing the insurance coverage from time to time to “save money.” My daughter was taking karate lessons and as fate would have it, one day in class she broke her arm. Between the emergency room visit, X-rays and orthopedic surgeon, our lack of health insurance ended up being one costly mistake we will never make again.
So if you are in between jobs, just out of college, or simply stretching your dollars every which way you can, please do not let you and your family go without health insurance. You can get a free insurance quote for even short-term medical insurance. If you need a place to start, MultiNational Underwriters® (www.mnui.com) has a short-term medical plan, called Amigo, which is an affordable alternative to COBRA. This could be perfect for those that are newly hired and waiting for their insurance benefits, self-employed with no insurance and those looking for a new job.

Our faltering economy is having far-reaching effects on many people. One such effect is on the health insurance coverage of people (and their families) who have lost their jobs. These people are either ending up uninsured, or are forced to pay for expensive COBRA coverage.
There is an affordable option, however. MultiNational Underwriters has a short-term medical plan called Amigo. This is an alternative to COBRA that is affordable and will help keep individuals and their families covered.

I’m about to sleep coz it’s almost 2am here already. But I just read in a site (www.mnui.com) about the importance of travel health insurance or international travel insurance in general, so I’ll write my thoughts about it before finally going to bed. Indeed, travel insurance is very important since we can’t really predict the situations or happenings that will occur during our travel, especially with our health, so we better be safe and be insured. During my work days in Denmark and Norway, my hostfamilies availed a health insurance for me, so I can avail of free check-up and other health privileges.
Now that I am already here in Spain, I don’t have a health insurance yet. But once my papers are ok, then my employers will also start processing my health insurance. I am also excited to have it coz I want to avail of the free check-up since I am feeling something with my body lately. So, I need to visit a doctor to have a health check.
