international health insurance

A few months back, a friend of mine (Holli) was in a nearly fatal motorcycle accident in India and suffered major brain trauma. The hospitals there, like in most developing countries, weren’t sufficient to care for her injuries. So she needed to be med-evac’d. Do you have any idea how much that costs?? Evidently, it can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars!

So it got me to thinking. What would my family do if I were in an accident like that? The hospitals here in Honduras probably aren’t much better than the ones in India. And I don’t have US health insurance to cover something like that. And who just has $150,000 lying around?

So a couple of weekends ago we were visiting with friends here in Tegus. (The husband commutes from the US every couple of months, and his wife and family live here permanently.) They have health insurance that works in Honduras AND in the US. And it covers emergency evacuation for situations just like the one Holli was in.

So since then I’ve been researching international travel insurance. One of the sites I found was www.hccmis.com. And according to the prices on their site, it’s very affordable depending on the deductible, even on a Honduran salary. ;)

So if you are traveling abroad (studying abroad, backpacking, whatever!) or living abroad like me, then I suggest you consider what you and your family would do if you were in an accident like Holli’s. If you want, you can click HERE to obtain a free quote for international health insurance. It’s quick and painless, and this kind of insurance could turn out to be priceless if something ever happened to you abroad!

Does your health insurance cover you while traveling?

This past week I was hospitalized with pneumonia.  It was totally unexpected and I am still not feeling up to par.  Thankfully I was at home and not traveling when I came down with it.  The cost of an unexpected illness while traveling can be extremely high.  If you’re traveling overseas, those costs can skyrocket even higher.

I have always recommended you get travel insurance to protect the investment of your trip.  Now I am recommending you also get travel insurance for your health.  That’s right!  You can buy health insurance to protect you while traveling.  MultiNational Underwriters (MNU) is a US based company that allows you to purchase health insurance for as little as $1 per day.  You choose your deductible, amount of coverage, and dates you want to be covered.  MNU will do the rest.  No, they can’t guarantee you won’t get sick while you are on vacation or business.  What they can do is provide you peace of mind knowing that if you do fall ill, it won’t bankrupt you.  You are covered.

Have a graduate student who is planning time abroad after graduation?  MNU has coverage for them too.

Check out their website (www.mnui.com) before your next trip overseas.  They offer 24 hour support – Protect yourself with health insurance for travelersFree travel medical insurance quote.

travel health insurance…

I’m about to sleep coz it’s almost 2am here already. But I just read in a site (www.mnui.com) about the importance of travel health insurance or international travel insurance in general, so I’ll write my thoughts about it before finally going to bed. Indeed, travel insurance is very important since we can’t really predict the situations or happenings that will occur during our travel, especially with our health, so we better be safe and be insured. During my work days in Denmark and Norway, my hostfamilies availed a health insurance for me, so I can avail of free check-up and other health privileges.

Now that I am already here in Spain, I don’t have a health insurance yet. But once my papers are ok, then my employers will also start processing my health insurance. I am also excited to have it coz I want to avail of the free check-up since I am feeling something with my body lately. So, I need to visit a doctor to have a health check. One of the biggest threats to your next holiday would be the chance of getting sick without adequate insurance cover. The mistake that many travellers make is to assume that their regular medical insurance is in force for their trip, only to find that the policy extends simply to your normal country of residence. To avoid this danger on your next vacation, make sure you are covered!

Travel Soccer Insurance

Growing up Sean was on a soccer team that used to travel outside of Ireland. Most of the games they played were in Ireland but every once in a while they’d play over in England. Now doing this was a bit risky only because if he got hurt playing soccer outside of his country, their insurance would not cover it. Now this was a long time ago, but it’s the same today. Say, for some reason, Tristan’s team made the states and then the nationals and then for some reason had to go and play outside of the United States - he would not be covered by our insurance if he got hurt. There is a travel medical insurance you can get from MultiNational Underwriters that helps you out just for this type of thing. I was told by Tristan’s coach to Check it out for the team “just in case”. (And that’s a BIG ‘just in case’). I did find out that they offer a “Sports Rider” that you can add to your insurance. From what I found it it’s very affordable and covers the player if they get injured. Personally, I think this is an awesome idea. I don’t forsee us needing it in the near future, but as the kids grow older it’s nice to know it’s out there. Who knows, maybe one of our kids will want to study abroad over in their daddy’s homeland of Ireland and if they’re still into soccer then like they are now, this insurance could come in handy! I can see my little guy going to college in Galway and playing on their Rugby team. We’d definitely need it then!

Travel Insurance

While I was traveling during the Christmas break I was offered traveler’s insurance by my airline. I declined since I had insurance in Canada and the US (I’m lucky in that regard) but it made me think a little bit. Having traveled to China, Europe and other far off places, I know that the need for insurance is great, but how many people really pick up the option to get traveler’s insurance when they buy their tickets?
